7 Creative Ways to Decorate your Home Office

If you’re lucky enough to work at home, you want to take the time to make sure that your home office is both a productive and inspiring work space. Far too often, home office decor is neglected under the guise that not many people will actually see where you work. In fact, most home offices have white walls, drab furniture, and a cluttered desk. Adding a slip covered sofa, some colorful wall decor and unique office wall art can turn your workspace into a hub of creativity.

Colorful Office Artwork
Are your home office walls currently white? No problem. While painting your office walls is one idea, paint isn’t always possible (especially if you have a rental agreement). Still, there are plenty of ways to add color to your home office.
  1. Vibrant Wall Art: Add one or two large pieces that are bursting with color to your office walls. A splash of bright red or orange will make any office stand out. You’ll also find these colors stimulating. Inexpensive places to find these are local discount retailers, yard sales and online. Don’t confine yourself to canvas though, wrought iron, wood and fabric can also make great wall art.
  2. Colorful Prints : Artists like Warhol, Kandinsky or Britto work well if you’re into modern art and bright colors; Monet and Van Gogh are also popular choices and easy to find online. If you want something unusual there are many websites that also support independent artists where limited edition prints can be purchased quite inexpensively.
  3. Large Office Posters: if a massive painting is out of your budget, consider a grouping of colorful patterns. Fabric or wall paper patterns can give your home office a warm and whimsical feel and there are plenty of choices online (do a search for free vector art). You can print them at home or have them printed at your local print shop if you’re looking for a higher quality. Insert these into pre-matted wooden frames for a polished and sophisticated look.
  4. Inspirational Design: Feeling adventurous? Take a few hours one weekend and fill a large poster board or canvas with splashes of color. Using acrylic or poster paints, take objects around your house (sponges, brushes, rope, the bottoms of tin cans) to create a truly unique painting that will make you smile each time you see it.
  5. Movies, Book covers & Plays: If you’re an aspiring playwright or script writer, putting scenes up from your favorite flicks might just be the thing you need to inspire you. Fancy yourself the next J.K. Rowlings? Pin up the book covers of some of your favorite books and get those creative juices flowing.

  7. Advertisements: If you’re a graphic or web designer, advertisements can sometimes serve as great sources of inspiration in terms of layout, font styles and color palettes. Rip these out of magazines and pin these up on a board. Not only will they make your home office space distinctive but they can also help you get ‘unstuck’ the next time you’re struggling to brainstorm a new project.
  8. Did you decorate sidewalks with chalk when you were a kid? From teachers to school children, chalk is used by a number of different people. Think about purchasing some chalkboard paint. This paint will allow you to create a chalkboard on any surface. Simply spray the paint, wait for it to dry, and create chalk designs to your heart’s content. Spray chalk is also a great way to write down notes, ideas, or sayings. The best part is that this spray paint is easy to clean up, so you won’t have to worry about making a mess.

We hope these ideas inspired you to dress up those bland walls. When you take the time to decorate your work space, you’ll create a home office that you love to spend time in.
